Alright so I had this vision in my head of a shoot and print of my best friends children for a while. But the whole thing is that they live in Washington, 10 whole hours away from me. My best friend knew about the shot that I wanted to take but didn’t know about the print I wanted to make. After a couple failed attempts of us traveling to go do this shoot, I took it upon myself to drive the 10 hours to Washington soulo. So I planned a day and drove 10 hours on I-5 for this one photo I’ve had in my head for months.
My drive there consisted of podcasts, crying to Jhene Aiko’s new album, and me silent panicking driving through the unexpected snow in the mountains with no snow plow in sight. I landed at my hotel in washington without a scratch and with all my snacks. I smacked two bags of grandma’s cookies and took a quick nap to recharge my body. I woke from my nap and traveled to my shoot, which was another hour and a half away from my hotel. After a bit of driving aimlessly down random dirt roads, I found a spot that fit my vision. I set up my camera while the kids were not trying to have any of it. Luckily mom had a box of fruit snacks in the trunk of her car and promised them they can have them after the shoot. So they posed it up like that angels that they are and they were paid in handfuls of fruit snack packets.
The shot came out exactly how I had envisioned it, I didn’t hold them up long because it was the last hour of light in the day and my models were hungry. I got the select shots that I needed and headed on my way. I stayed the night in Washington, the next morning I stopped at a farmers market in Portland, Oregon to grab some souvenirs so I have some memorabilia of my soulo journey. Then I headed back down to California.
Here are the photos from that shoot and me presenting the print to my best friend. Thanks for reading and viewing. Keep on rocking in the free world aaand doot doola doot doo…
The gift, a custom skateboard deck with his kids on it. Our friendship started way back when our only transportation was skateboards and bmx bikes. It was only right I take it back to those roots.
